Bastille Day

Since 1789, when the revolutionaries stormed the Bastille in Paris and began a bloody process that eventually forced out the monarchy, Bastille Day is celebrated with great passion and grand fireworks every 14th July in France.

King Louis XVI asked an advisor when he was informed of the events at the Bastille: 'Is this a revolt?' 'No, your majesty, this is a revolution.' And so it was.

The horrific killings in Nice this year have brought yet more pain to a nation already hurting. Bastille Day celebrations like the ones in Nice happen in towns and villages all over France, and it could so easily have happened at any one of these family events. We attended two separate events this year, firstly in Uzerche, and then at Arnac Pompadour, where we picnicked on the racecourse. Both occasions boasted the most incredible firework displays, imaginatively choreographed to music. Families filled the squares and streets to eat, drink and be merry. To think that so many families, just like us, didn't return from these celebrations in Nice is heartbreaking.

Whenever we drive to Seilhac, we pass a little corner paddock containing three little pigs. They've made their house out of corrugated iron, so the wolf may meet with some resistance when he starts blowing. The pigs disappear every winter, however, and come back the next summer, always much smaller. They must overwinter at a health spa to lose all of that porky pork... They are the most curious of animals, running to the fence each time we pass and snorting their piggy greetings.

We visited a vintage vehicles fair in Uzerche at the weekend. There was also a vide grenier, so my new addiction was sated. Just a little 1920s oval table and a rickety chair this time... I know another vide grenier addict, so it wasn't a great surprise to find Em and Pete there.

This old London bus has been converted into a little restaurant- cute, n'est pas?

I find my daily blog audience scores quite entertaining:
