A Very Near Miss
No, the mushrooms are not the near miss. They're perfectly edible. I've checked. They're common field mushrooms, and they are growing on our common field.*
The Incident
I was mowing, of course. Kevin was suddenly visible in a state of emergency. He was cutting down another unnecessary walnut tree, using the technique he was shown by the tree fellers. Unfortunately, the technique was not playing ball, and Kevin found himself with a big tree trying to fall on the new fosse septique tank and the digger! He called for assistance, but there was only me...
He had tied a rope to it to stop it falling the wrong way, but there was a stale mate.
Kevin issued plans, including getting the car, which I got, then returned to its position of safety. We moved the new fosse septique tank out of the way. And the lengths of pipe. We couldn't move Ian's digger- no keys. It was a bit of a risk...
I took lots of photos... and then I took the strain while Kevin chainsawed through the last little nibblet of trunk. Luckily, it fell in slow motion, and we were both able to run out of the way as it fell.
Down!
Can you see the nibblet? It was such a tiny thread of tree holding us back from total disaster!
The wedge that should have ensured a tidy felling. The tree didn't want to go in the direction of the wedge. It felt the lure of the digger. Feeling that lure myself, I mowed round the digger this evening, so it is enjoying the privilege of a temporary tufty tuffet.
* If you are a foraging expert and can see that these are in fact very poisonous mushrooms, please let us know before breakfast...
